  • Get practical, hands-on experience with the same equipment, software, and production facilities used by professional filmmakers
  • Collaborate creatively with other high school filmmakers from all over the world to tell your own stories

Who You Are

The High School Summer Program is for you if you:

  • 15-18 years old at the time of enrollment
  • Are passionate about the visual storytelling you see in films, television shows, video games, and streaming media
  • Want to gain college-level experience on our Los Angeles campus
  • Want to earn college credit before you get to college

You'll Earn College Credit

When you successfully complete a course, you'll receive College Academic Credit. Why is this important? College credit earned as a high school student looks GREAT on future college admissions applications and also on future scholarship applications when you apply to colleges. It also can give you Advanced Placement (AP) credit at your current high school.

What You'll Study

The 2018 High School Summer Program is a three-session series of two-week courses. You can choose just one course or a series of courses that we've designed so you build a portfolio of experience in different aspects of the digital film production process.

Digital Film Production

Learn how to express your personal creative vision by producing your own digital film. You'll experience the unique collaborative nature of digital storytelling as you produce an original short film using our industry standard gear, shooting facilities, and editing suites. At the end of the course, you'll get to screen your film for your Columbia College Hollywood friends and family in our hi-def surround-sound theatre.

Advanced Digital Film Production

Prerequisite Course: Digital Film Production
After you complete Digital Film Production, this course is your opportunity to immerse yourself in the post-production details that create a polished short film, including enhanced sound, titles, and graphics. You'll also learn how to use marketing tools to optimize digital viewership and grow an online audience.

Experience the art of storytelling as a performer. This is an immersive introduction to the fundamental skills every aspiring professional actor must master. You'll be challenged in a whole new way with college-level acting studies in movement, voice, characterization, script interpretation, and improvisation.

Learn to create a visual mood using a wide array of industry-standard lighting and camera equipment with individualized guidance from an experienced, professional Hollywood cinematographer. This is an immersive, hands-on course in which you'll experience the real-world skills required to light and shoot digital films.

Discover what it takes to write professional-quality screenplays that are sought after by Hollywood producers, agents, and studio executives. You'll delve into story structure and character development as you learn how to create memorable dialog, direct action with words, and convey your unique screen vision to your first audience: the reader. This an immersive, college-level course taught by an experienced Hollywood screenwriter.

Add new skills to your digital storytelling arsenal with this hands-on introduction to editing. You'll learn the fundamentals of editing and creating new digital content for films and new media productions using the same industry-standard gear and software used by professional digital artists. You'll work in our pro-quality digital editing suites guided by experienced, professional editors and visual effects artists.

The VFX Course emphasizes Visual Effects asset creation & compositing using skills drawn from the fields of photography, compositing, video, film, and animation. At the conclusion of the course, students will present a Visual Effects project that they have created using methods learned in the class and present this project on the final day during a showcase for family and friends. Students should also be able to use their finished project to get internships at Visual Effects houses.
