Average Length of Program

Assuming that a student takes 16 units per quarter 3 quarters a year, the average BFA program takes 4 years to complete; the average AFA program takes 2 years. However, by taking a full course load year-round including Summer Quarter, or by taking more units per quarter, it is possible to complete the programs in a shorter length of time.

Credit Units

General Education and Lecture Classes

The number of credit units earned for a General Education and Lecture class corresponds to the number of academic hours of instruction in a standard week. Thus, a class which meets for 4 hours once a week earns the student 4 credit units per quarter.

Studio and Production Classes

The number of credit units earned for a Studio Production class is based on the number of academic hours of instruction PLUS lab and/or practicum hours (i.e. setup and striking of equipment and sets, creative process, supervised production, unsupervised production, etc.). A student earning 4 units will be required to commit additional lab hours of at least 6 hours weekly. As is customary in visual arts studies, lab and practicum instructional hours are treated as studio hours.

Clock Hour to Credit Hour Conversion Formula

One quarter’s credit hour equals: a) 10 hours of lecture or classroom contact plus appropriate outside preparation; b) 20 hours of supervised laboratory instruction and appropriate outside preparation; or c) 30 hours of internship or work-related experience. A clock hour consists of a period of 60 minutes, with 50 minutes spent in classroom work.

Full-time vs. Part-time Studies

Students taking fewer than 12 units of study per quarter are considered part-time students, while students taking 12 or more units per quarter are considered full-time students. Students who maintain a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 (B average) or higher may, with permission of their academic advisor and the Dean of the College, carry 20 units of study per quarter. All international students must be full-time students.
