2017 High School Summer Program

The Columbia College Hollywood Summer High School courses offer high school students a unique opportunity to learn the art of Film and Television Production, Editing, Screenwriting, Acting and Motion Graphics from experienced entertainment professionals in a collegiate setting. Participants come from all over the world and have included students from several continents. 

Students also receive College Academic Credit for successfully completing our courses. Why is this important? College credit earned as a high school student looks GREAT on future college admissions applications and also on future scholarship applications when you apply to colleges. Our courses can also give students Advanced Placement (AP) credit at their current high school. 
 
The PRIORITY APPLICATION DEADLINE has passed but a few spots still remain and students who apply by June 1st will get the normal $50.00 application fee waived!  All students must be at least 16 years of age at the time of enrollment in order to participate in our courses.

Summer Program Sessions
Our 2017 High School Summer Program courses are offered in 4 two-week sessions. You can take one two-week course or build your own package of up to 4 courses to spend an entire summer immersed in the world of creative digital storytelling. 

Session 1:  June 19 – July 1

Course Descriptions

Acting Essentials

Experience the art of storytelling as a performer with this introduction to fundamental skills that must be mastered by professional actors. You’ll be challenged in a whole new way by college-level acting studies in movement, voice, characterization, script interpretation, and improvisation, on the same sets, studios, and performance spaces used by Columbia College Hollywood Bachelor of Fine Arts degree students. 

Sessions 1 and 3 only

Acting for the Camera

Delve into the physical, vocal, and textual preparation required to interpret a script, create a character, audition, and perform in a wide range of film and television genres. You’ll have access to Columbia College Hollywood’s professional-quality cameras, lighting, studios, and theaters, as you gain valuable college-level acting experience.

Cinematography

Create a visual mood using a wide array of industry-standard lighting and camera equipment with individualized guidance from experienced professional Hollywood cinematographers. This is an immersive, hands-on course in which you’ll experience the real-world skills required to light and shoot digital films.

Digital Film Production

Learn how to express your own creative vision by producing professional quality digital films. You’ll experience the unique collaborative nature of digital storytelling as you produce, shoot, and edit projects using the same industry-standard gear, standing sets, digital editing suites, and production facilities used by Columbia College Hollywood grads who are now professional filmmakers.

Directing: Working with Actors

Experience the creative process from the actor’s point of view. You’ll analyze and break down scripts to understand characters, dialogue, and story, as you learn how the most successful directors develop a rapport with their actors. Then, get real-life experience with the casting process using the same professional-level facilities and equipment used by Columbia College Hollywood Bachelor of Fine Arts students.

Directing: Shooting on Set

Develop the essential, real-life skillset necessary to navigate a shooting set as director and crew. You’ll get hands-on experience using pro level equipment to block and stage action for the camera and make aesthetic choices in the moment on the same standing sets and studios used by Columbia College Hollywood Bachelor of Fine Arts students.

Editing

Immerse yourself in the real-life role of the digital film editor as you learn to tell screen stories in the most entertaining way possible. You’ll study the language and theory of editing then practice your skills by creating a demo reel in our industry-standard digital suites using the same editing software used by professional Hollywood editors.

Producing for New Media

Develop the essential skillset necessary to produce and launch web-based content for a variety of new media genres, including made-for-streaming series, games, and apps. You’ll write, shoot, and produce a pilot for your own original web series and crew on your classmates’ projects using the same industry-standard gear, sets, and facilities used by Columbia College Hollywood Bachelor of Fine Arts students.

Screenwriting

Discover what it takes to write professional-quality screenplays that are sought after by Hollywood producers, agents, and development execs. You’ll delve into story structure and character development as you learn how to create memorable dialog, direct action with words, and convey your unique screen vision to a reader.

Visual Effects & Motion Graphics

Add new skills to your digital storytelling arsenal with this hands-on introduction to visual effects and motion graphics. You’ll learn the fundamentals of creating animated and digital content for films and new media productions on industry-standard gear and software used by professional digital artists in the same digital suites used by Columbia College Hollywood Bachelor of Arts in Editing/VFX students.

Course Packages

Although students are welcome to only apply for one course, we recommend you apply to attend multiple courses in order to increase your knowledge base. You'll also earn 4 college credits for each course you successfully complete! Below are some recommended course packages to consider depending on your desired field of study.

Four Courses:

Screenwriting + Directing/Shooting on Set + Film Production + Editing
Screenwriting + Directing/Working with Actors + Directing/Shooting on Set + Film Production
Screenwriting + Producing for New Media + Film Production + Visual Effects & Motion Graphics
 
All courses meet Monday through Saturday from 10am to 5:30pm.
 

Housing

If you need housing, students will stay in a campus-approved housing facility.  The housing facility is staffed with CCH live-in residential advisors and shuttle service to and from the CCH campus is provided.  The housing cost includes 3 daily meals on weekdays and brunch and dinner on weekends.  Lunch is served to all students on campus Monday thru Friday.  The housing cost is $2,700 per student per workshop, and is based on double occupancy.  A limited number of single rooms are available at an additional cost.

Scholarships

The Trustee's Scholarship Fund is a need and merit-based tuition scholarship that provides partial tuition assistance for students applying to our Summer High School courses.  If you are awarded a scholarship, the scholarship is applied directly to your Columbia College Hollywood student account.  Students may only apply for the scholarship after they have been accepted for admittance.  We are no longer accepting scholarship applications for the High School Summer Program. The application deadline has passed.
